Q. What is the legal age for tail docking puppies?

Section 6 of the Animal Welfare Act prohibits the docking of a dog’s tail, other than for medical purposes or for certified working dogs, of puppies no more than 5 days old. We believe the best age for tail docking is 24-72 hours (1-3 days of age). Please note, the mother of the puppies must be present at the docking appointment.

Puppies shouldn’t receive their first vaccine before the age of 6 weeks as antibodies received from their mothers may interfere with their immune response to the vaccine. For an optimal response, puppies should receive their first vaccine around 6-8 weeks of age, and second vaccine 2-4 weeks later. The ideal age for the second vaccine being around 10 weeks.

However, a cross breed between, for example, a spaniel and a terrier, is not.

It is now mandatory in the UK for all puppies to be microchipped and registered with a database by the age of 8 weeks. It is the obligation of the breeder to ensure the dog is microchipped before it is sold to its new owner. We will register all puppies that we microchip on the database we use, at the time of microchipping.
